NEW ORLEANS — Georgia Southern goalkeeper Katie Merson has earned the Eagles' first Sun Belt Conference award when she was named the league's defensive player of the week on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagle netminder picked up two victories to open the year and pitched her 15th career shutout on Sunday against UNC Wilmington. Merson is now unbeaten in seven-straight matches versus opponents not in the power five conferences.
