GSU tops UTC, falls to Elon

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The No. 3 seed Georgia Southern Eagles rode the long ball to a 3-0 victory over No. 1 Chattanooga in a Southern Conference Tournament elimination game Thursday night, belting two home runs to defeat the top seed.

Senior Jenny Side started the fireworks with opposite field shot to right in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Megen Smith kept the momentum going with a two-run blast off the scoreboard in left-centerfield in the bottom of the third to give the Eagles (30-25) the 3-0 advantage.

With her 18th home run of the season, Smith claimed sole possession of second in a single season in SoCon history. Western Carolina’s Ashley Adams set the record at 21 in 2006.

Smith was equally as impressive in the circle, holding the Mocs scoreless in 4.1 innings pitched.

Georgia Southern advanced to the second day of competition in the Southern Conference Tournament, and will face the loser between Elon and UNC Greensborotoday at 11 a.m.

Smith hit 17th home run of season

The Eagles scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the comeback effort fell short losing to Elon 3-2 in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament Thursday morning.

Junior Megen Smith led off the seventh with her 17th home run of the season, sending the pitch out to left field to cut the Elon lead to 3-1. Senior Sam Russo singled with one out, and pinch-runner Alexa Lewis scored on senior Kelly Burnett’s two-out, RBI-single.

Junior pitcher and two-time Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year Brianna Streetmon (19-11)took the loss, though  kept the Eagles in the game, pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth inning.

 

Screven in good shape at GHSA meet

            JEFFERSON – The Screven County Gamecocks had a strong showing on day one of the 2010 GHSA boys track championships Thursday, scoring 16 points to stand in fourth place in Class AA with two days remaining.

            Cornelious Roberts took second place in both the long jump (22-feet, 7.5-inches) and the high jump (6-foot-4) to put SCHS in the running.

            In Class A action, Chris Bellamy put Claxton in a tie for sixth place with seven points after a fourth-place finish in shot put (48’1.75”) and a seventh-place finish in the discus (137 feet). Bryan County sits in ninth place with four points after Willie Deloach finished sixth in the long jump (21’8.75”) and eighth in the triple jump (42’8”).

            Metter got on the scoreboard when Dean Eason took seventh in the long jump (20’6”).

            The meet continues today and concludes Sunday.

 

BA basketball camp

        Bulloch Academy head basketball coach Chandler Dennard invites all local and area boys and girls going into grades 2-5 to sign up for the 2010 Gator Basketball summer camp.

            The annual camp, conducted by Coach Dennard and several present BA basketball players, runs from June 1-4 from 9 a.m.-noon in the school’s gymnasium. This instructional opportunity will provide campers with basic basketball fundamentals in a relaxed, fun-fill environment. Campers will receive a camp t-shirt and opportunities to win awards in various skill-level competitions.

        Bulloch Academy head soccer coach Will Avra invites local and area boys and girls going into grades 2-5 to sign up for the 2010 Gator Soccer Camp.

            The annual camp, conducted by Coach Avra and several varsity players, runs from June 8-11 from 9 a.m.-noon at Gator Alley. This instructional opportunity will provide campers with basic soccer skills as well as scrimmages and fun games as well as a cool camp t-shirt.

FUNdamental football camp

          Bulloch Academy assistant head football coach Ronnie Hodges invites all local and area boys and girls going into grades 2-5 to sign up for the Gator FUNdamental football day camp.

            The annual camp, conducted by Coach Hodges and several present and past BA football players, runs from June 14-17 from 9 a.m. to noon on the school’s practice field behind the gymnasium.
            This instructional opportunity will provide campers with basic football fundamentals in a relaxed, fun-filled environment. Campers will receive a camp t-shirt and opportunities to win awards in various skill-level competitions.

            The annual camp, conducted by the coaches and current varsity cheerleaders, runs from June 21-24 from 1-4 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. This instructional opportunity will provide campers with instruction on cheers, chants, stunts and much more as well as a cool camp t-shirt.
