rhythmic pounding of horses’ hooves, the creaking of old doors and heavy
footsteps on a wooden floor are just some of the sounds you will hear in The
Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow: Live Radio Play on October 25-27 in
the Whitaker Black Box Theater at 41 West Main Street.
The imaginative 60-minute radio live-on-stage drama is an adaptation of Washington Irving’s famous short story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and will be performed by the members of the Averitt Center’s Junior Theater Company.
Adapted for radio by Anthony E. Palermo and directed by Averitt theater instructor Timothy VanBeverhoudt, the play brings to life the scenes and characters that were described in the original story, including the one-room schoolhouse, the Van Tassel household, the country damsels, the townsfolk’s ghost stories, the terrible church choir, the quilting frolic and the climactic chase by the Headless Horseman.
The performance is full of sound effects, background music and the voices of home-school freshman Tate Miller (Ichabod Crane), Williams James Middle School students Madison Harvey (Brom Van Broont), Riley Martindale (Katrina Van Tassel) and Southeast Bulloch Middle School student Thom Mortimore (Narrator and Headless Horseman). Close your eyes, listen and imagine each scene with the members of the Averitt Center Junior Company.
In a quaint, dreary community where time stands still, new schoolmaster Ichabod Crane is losing his head over the lovely Katrina. Unfortunately, local brute Brom is vying for her affection as well and making Ichabod’s life terribly difficult. But as night draws in and the stars sink deeper in the sky, Ichabod soon realizes that there may be even worse things in Sleepy Hollow. Lurking just over the bridge is the Headless Horseman, the infamous ghost with whom Mr. Crane soon comes face to face.
Show times for the event, which is sponsored by Bulloch Broadband, are 7:30 p.m. on the 25th and 26th and the 27th at 3 p.m., just prior to the annual Scare on the Square celebration. General admission tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and can be purchased by visiting the Averitt Center’s Main Gallery (open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday 9 a.m.-1 p.m.), by calling 912-212-2787 or by visiting our website at averittcenterforthearts.org/performances-events.
