Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents arrested a man in connection to a Tuesday homicide in Evans County.

Demeris J. Mills, 29, of Claxton, had not yet been charged with any offense as of Thursday afternoon, but was arrested “in connection with the fight that led to” the stabbing death of James R. Mills, 35, also of Claxton, said Statesboro GBI Special Agent Cyrus Purdiman.

The fight involved several people, he said. Others who were present at the scene are being questioned as well.

Evans County Sheriff’s investigators requested GBI assistance after responding to a Winnmeier Drive residence, where they found the victim suffering from a stab wound to the upper chest area, he said.

“The preliminary investigation revealed (the victim) had been in a physical altercation with multiple subjects during the time he was stabbed,”Purdiman said in a statement released Thursday.

James Mills was taken to Evans Memorial Hospital, where he died from the injuries, he said.

GBI agents are continuing the investigation, questioning others who were at the scene, he said. Charges against Demeris J. Mills are pending. Purdiman did not say whether the victim and suspect in custody are related.
