Local events will commemorate Georgia's Arbor Day this weekend

    Local organizations and state representatives are coming together this weekend to commemorate Georgia's Arbor Day.
    Starting today at the Charter Conservatory for Liberal Arts & Technology, graduating seniors and their families will have a tree planting ceremony to celebrate Arbor Day and their 2008 graduatine class. In addition, there will be a reading of Joyce Kilmer's "Trees" and a presentation sponsored by the Georgia Forestry Commission. Activities start at 9:30 a.m.
    On Saturday from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., Keep Bullcoh Beautiful will be giving away over 250 seedlings in the public parking lot behing the courthouse on Hill Street. KBB, in conjunction with Georgia Southern Botanical Garden, Statesboro Regional Library, Bulloch Council of Garden Clubs, Statesboro Tree Board and First Southern National Bank, is encouraging members of the community to plant trees.
    "Our goal is to plant over 300 trees for Arbor Day," said KBB's Director Brooke Carney. "We will be giving away 250 seedlings and planting 50 trees with volunteer groups around the community."
    Aslo in commemoration of Arbor Day, Georgia Senator Jack Hill and Representative Bob Lane designated 10 new seedlings to be planted in Bulloch, as part of the Georgia Forestry Commissions's annual seedling program.
    "Georgia's community forests proivide counbtelss benefits to our citizens, from shade, fresh air and economic vitality, to safer neighborhoods and stronger community bonds," said Lane.
    Hill's donated seedlings will be planted at Sallie Zetterower Elementary, Julia P. Bryant Elementary and the Charter School. Lane's seedlings will be planted at Mill Creek Elementary and Langston Chapel Elementary Schools.
