A Bulloch County Correctional Institute inmate escaped from a work detail Thursday afternoon, high jacking a county van and taking a guard and four other inmates hostage, said Bulloch County Sheriff Captain Todd Hutchens.
Alexander Grimes, 28, pulled a screwdriver on the guard while on a work detail on Ga. 25 near Womack Road East, he said.
Grimes, holding the guard hostage using the screwdriver held to his neck, drove the county van to an area near Church Street in Claxton, Hutchins said. The other four inmates were not involved in the incident, but did nothing to stop it and “stayed out of the way,” he said.
Once in Claxton, the guard engaged in a scuffle with Grimes who escaped and fled, he said. The guard suffered minor injuries.
Hutchens said Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents and members of the United States Marshals Fugitive Squad searched for Grimes into the evening, with the assistance of the Evans County and Bulloch County Sheriff’s Departments.
The Bulloch County Sheriff’s office will issue warrants for Grimes regarding the incidents occurring in Bulloch County, and the GBI will prosecute Grimes for incidents occurring in Evans County, he said.
Grimes' Criminal history includes drug charges.
Anyone with information regarding Grimes' whereabouts is asked to call the Bulloch County Sheriff's Department at (912) 764-8888 or the GBI at (912) 871-1121, he said.
