Duck killed during dispute

A Preston Drive man who police said slammed a pet duck to its death Monday is behind bars without bond, according to Bulloch County Jail records.
Matthew Paul Lester, 26, Preston Drive, was arguing with his male roommate just before 9 a.m. Monday, according to Statesboro Police Capt. Scott Brunson.
The other roommate, owner of the duck, told police Lester was supposed to have been moving out, and when an argument ensued that morning, Lester picked up a fork and carving knife and came at the victim, threatening to harm him if he called police.
This alarmed the victim, and he did not report the issue at the time, Brunson said.
However, when Lester later grabbed the victim’s pet duck and slammed it against the floor, killing the fowl, the victim decided to contact authorities and report Lester’s behavior.
When police arrived and met with Lester and the victim, they charged Lester with aggravated assault (for threats against the victim with the knife), aggravated animal cruelty and obstructing or hindering persons making an emergency phone call (for threatening the victim with harm if he called police,) he said.
Lester was taken into custody and transported to the Bulloch County Jail, where he remains without bond.
