Hola, mis amigos! Feliz Cinco de Mayo, and how ‘bout those Hawks? Pushing the NBA’s best to the brink of elimination. Pulling a city together on the biggest of bandwagons. Forcing a Game 7 in a series everyone thought would be over before Game 1. Going to Boston, and, well...
So now we look towards next year, and the Hawkers should be a pretty formidable foe. I may even have to watch a game or two. Don’t hold me to that.
After a 1-0 week (thank you Mr. Mario): 12-17 for the year.
Congrats
Certainly some congratulations are in order for the Screven County 400-meter relay team of Kayla Parrish, Brittany Lawton, Stephanie Scott and Lauren Lipsey, who took home a state championship this past weekend, running a brisk 48.805. I can’t do anything in 48 seconds.
Out of every AA school in the state, these four girls ran a faster relay than any of them. That’s pretty impressive.
Some of our area’s finest young men will try and emulate the performance of those Lady Gamecocks in their own events. The GHSA boys track and field championships start Thursday in Jefferson.
Eagle stick ball
What a wild and woolly weekend on the diamond out at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Georgia Southern took 2-of-3 from a classy bunch of Citadel players, coaches and fans. They sure thought GSU was No. 1, and had no qualms about etting them know it.
It appears the Eagles have steered the ship back on course after a bit of a mid-season slump. I think Southern fans are just going to have to come to terms with the fact that on any give day, the scoreboard at J.I. could look a lot like it does Saturday’s at Paulson.
Despite Sunday being the first time all year GSU won without reaching double digits, I’m starting to think the pitching’s coming around.
With just four homes games left — including today at 2 p.m. against Mercer — I might as well throw some predictions out there so I can make my ascent towards .500.
Eagles beat Mercer by at least 10, then take the series against a tough UNC Greensboro team this weekend.
Playoff baseball
As I mentioned last week, playoff baseball starts this weekend for six — count ‘em — six of our area teams.
Three of those teams will be at home Friday night, hosting doubleheaders for the first round. If you’re in the area, try to stop in and see Statesboro, Claxton or Screven County. These kids need all the home-field advantage they can get.
Elsewhere, Bulloch Academy, Southeast Bulloch and Jenkins County will all be on the road for their first-round contests.
Good luck to all of you.
