Statesboro High’s boys basketball team overcame a sluggish start to capture its second win of the season on Saturday, downing Southeast Bulloch 59-48.
Statesboro coach Lee Hill said SEB did a good job of slowing the game’s tempo, while his players didn’t react well.
“I thought SEB played their game and we kind of slipped into their game,” he said. “They slowed the tempo up on us and we weren’t really aggressive enough on defense and we weren’t patient enough on offense.”
The Blue Devils (2-1) were bolstered by the return of Justin Houston, a star football player that Hill says is his team’s best player and leader.
Houston didn’t start but still led a balanced SHS scoring attack with 12 points.
“He didn’t play that many minutes but he played well when he did play,” said Hill.
Sean Legree scored 11 points, while Patrick Parker and Keavis Hunter added eight. Jared Houston and Mario Jackson also chipped in with seven points each.
Statesboro led by just four after the first period and seven at halftime, 32-25, before picking up the defensive intensity.
SEB’s James Scott led all scorers with 14 points, while teammate Tony Raymond added 13.
The Blue Devils’ next game occurs at Savannah’s Beach High, while SEB travels to Portal. Both games take place on Tuesday.

Johnson of Savannah used a 17-point fourth quarter to pull away from Statesboro Friday night, winning 54-40. Johnson led by just four going into the final quarter before outscoring the Blue Devils 17-7.
Patrick Parker led SHS with 11 while Sean Legree and Morgan Doty had seven points each.

Statesboro’s girls basketball team got an easy win over Johnson of Savannah on Friday, 55-14.
The Lady Blue Devils were led in scoring by Monnette Bennett’s 16 points. Victoria Mikell added 10.
No Johnson player had more than four points in the losing effort.
