Coming off of a tough 35-0 road loss to Laney last Friday, the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets (1-6, 0-4 Region 3-AA) continue to try and improve and look down the road to what lies ahead.
With an offense that has shown signs of playmaking abilities, one thing lies between the Jackets and success on the football field.
“Maturity,” said SEB coach John Kenny. “I think we mature and gain valuable experience each game.”
Facing the spread attack of Jefferson County — something the Jackets are familiar with — will be no easy task, but SEB has a spread attack of its own. The success of the offense starts at the line of scrimmage.
“Our offensive line had its best game last week,” Kenny said. “We moved the football up and down the field, but we have to take advantage when we get in the red zone. We have to put the football in the end zone.”
The Warriors (4-2-1, 3-1) will attack the Jacket offense with a 3-5 scheme, which will come at the SEB offense from all angles.
“(They will be) blitzing linebackers all over the place,” said Kenny. “It will be an attacking defense, and we’ll have to be able to handle all of the different blitzes. We’ll run and throw against them and try to catch their linebackers out of place — in the wrong area. If we can do that, we can take advantage of it.”
As if playing one of the top teams in the region wasn’t enough, Southeast will have to do it on the road for the second week in a row.
“We talked about it this week and last week,” Kenny said. “You’ve got to handle the trip. It’s a long one, and we’ll split it up — get them up half way and let them stretch their legs and feed them. That’s all part of playing football. You’ve got to handle the trip there. I think it affects them, but it’s more about how you handle it.”
Adversity is nothing new for the Yellow Jackets, but they have continued to strive to improve throughout the season.
“The kids have handled it well, and they continue to practice hard,” said Kenny. “We’re going to keep on doing what we do. We’re not going to change anything. We’re just going to keep doing what we do and try to get better each week. If we do that, at the end of the year I’ll be real happy.”
The game against the warriors will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on the road in Jefferson County.
SEB JV 14, Metter JV 14
The Southeast Bulloch junior varsity squad took on the Tigers of Metter and capped off the season with a 14-14 tie. The JV Jackets finished the season at 2-3-1.
Dominique Rawls tied the game with a two-point conversion with just over two minutes remaining in the contest after scampering 80 yards for a touchdown on a kickoff return, and added an interception on defense. Rodney Davis added an interception.
The game was highlighted by a 70-yard touchdown run by Dearious Odum, and the defense was led by Jerry Howard, Rob Ware, Michael Duke and Josh Joiner.
