The Statesboro boys soccer team got itself turned around just in time.
The Blue Devils entered Tuesday’s Region 3-AAAA playoff game having not scored a goal since March 15, but had no trouble finding the net in a 9-0 win over Hephzibah.
With the win, Statesboro locked up a spot in the state playoffs.
“That’s big for us and big for the school,” SHS coach Nick Thrower said. “Getting that first goal just took all of the weight off of us. Everything got a little easier after that.”
Wesley Budget led the way with a hat trick while Hector Angeles netted a pair of goals. Joe Wilds, Andrew Ballard, Alex Wagner and Walker Paul Tedders also scored on the night.
Lady Devils clinch state spot
The Lady Blue Devils of Statesboro clinched their spot in the state soccer playoffs in style Tuesday evening with a 10-0 rout of Cross Creek in the Region 3-AAAA at Womack Field.
Tori Thompson notched a hat trick for the Devils and Sarah Brown found the net twice.
Emmalyne Sisson, Tess Newton, Katie Wilson, Morgan Bowen and Kristen Reichard scored a goal each to cap the offensive outburst.
Destinee Lanier needed to make just one save in notching the clean sheet.
Statesboro now hits the road as the Devils head to Augusta to take on Richmond Academy on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
SEB falls at Pierce County
BLACKSHEAR — Pierce County scored off a throw in six minutes before halftime and again off a corner kick with 16 minutes to play to defeat Southeast Bulloch, 2-0, Tuesday in region action.
The loss drops SEB to 3-3 in Region 1-AAA and virtually eliminates any state playoff hopes for the Yellow Jackets.
Southeast Bulloch faces Savannah Arts Academy Friday at 7 p.m., at Fred Shaver Field.
SEB senior striker Doug Flott had several scoring opportunities in the first half, but could not convert. The more physical Bears controlled the midfield and SEB mounted only a few scoring opportunities in the second half.
