Local Roundup: Screven wins defensive battle

    LOUISVILLE — The Screven County Gamecocks were shut out for three quarters, but scored twice in the fourth quarter and escaped with a 12-7 win over Jefferson County in the region opener for both teams.
    Screven (15-0, 1-0 Region 3-AA) Scored with 9:47 bremeining in the game with a 5-yard pass from Donta Wilburn to Caleb Krulic on fourth down, but the Gamecocks missed the extra point and trailed 7-6.
    The Warriors (2-3, 0-1) returned the ensuing kickoff to the SCHS 12, but turned it over on downs to allow the game-winning 80-yard drive. Malik Prescvott (26-131) scored the game winner from three yards out.
    Jefferson used 40 yards worth of SCHS penalties to score a touchdown on its opening drive.
Panthers fall at Johnson County
    WRIGHTSVILLE — Johnson County 2-3, 1-0 Region 3B-A) cruised to a 42-12 win over the visiting Portal Panthers on Friday.
    Portal (2-2, 0-1) got a pair of five-yard touchdown runs by Fred Holloway and quarterback Evan Street.
    Portal is back in action on the road against region rival Claxton next Friday at 7:30 p.m.

GSU women win Sun Belt opener
    MONROE, La. — Georgia Southern picked up a 3-1 win over UL Monroe on Friday afternoon to go top of the league in the Eagles’ debut in the Sun Belt Conference. The Eagles (6-2-1, 1-0-0 SBC) never trailed in the victory and earned the program’s first-ever win over the Warhawks (6-4-1, 0-1-0 SBC) in the first meeting of the series. Georgia Southern visits UL Lafayette on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Surging Eagles visit Jacksonville
     Georgia Southern men’s Soccer puts a three-game winning streak on the line Saturday night with a trip to face Jacksonville.
    The Eagles enter the weekend match ranked among the top-25 in five national stat categories including seventh in scoring offense. Georgia Southern faces the Dolphins at 7 p.m.

SBCPRD Punt, Pass and Kick cancelled
    The Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department's Punt, Pass and Kick competition that was scheduled for today at Mill Creek has been cancelled due to poor field conditions.
