Last February, Bulloch Academy’s Daniel Hendrix breezed through the 112-pound weight class to earn himself a state title. This season, Hendrix bumped up two weight classes, but kept his accomplishments at their same spectacular level.
Saturday afternoon, Hendrix finished off a pair of challengers to take the individual title at 126 pounds at the GISA Class AAA state championships.
“He’s one of our big point scorers,” BA coach Andy Tomlin said. “We’ve had a real good run and it’s exciting anytime you can watch one of your guys win a state title.”
Individual titles are exciting, but Hendrix’s performance went a long way toward something even bigger. Hendrix and his 13 teammates combined for 281 points as the Gators won the team title by a comically large 73-point margin over their closest competitors.
“This is a very special accomplishment for everyone,” Tomlin said. “Winning state took a lot of commitment from our guys. The best part is that we’ve got a lot of them coming back that will want to do it again next year.”
