Man I’m pretty amazing. Just when it looked like the season was taking a turn for the worst — blam! — I’m back over .500 for the year.
Georgia Southern began the week barely above water at 7-5 in league play. Three games later, as I so ingeniously predicted, they’re 10-5 with five conference games to go.
Three of those five are at home, and the crowds keep getting bigger — even if the students still aren’t showing up.
Nevermind the fact that a Davidson win Wednesday eliminates GSU from winning the South Division crown. There’s more important things to dwell on, like my 3-2 record after the Eagles went a perfect 3-0 this week.
So let’s stick with the Eagles. I say they go on the road Thursday and beat a dangerous Wofford team. Put a check by it.

Tourney time
That about does it for the regular season, and what a season it was.
Portal won 24 out of 25. Statesboro managed to avoid a meltdown with only 10 players and once again finished with a winning record.
Quietly the Lady Blue Devils are the biggest contender for a state championship no one is talking about. Screven County has two dangerous teams poised to make a run.
If Bulloch Academy hits triple digits again the roof of their gym might collapse.
So this week we begin the process of eliminating pretenders and contenders.
Every team makes their respective region tourney’s —only the four who survive into the semifinals make state.
On the boys’ side, Portal, Statesboro, BA and Screven County should all be locks. As I predicted last week, SEB will upset its way into the field as well.
On the girls side, the Lady Devils will miss out only if they miss the bus to the game, Screven is a favorite and BA and Jenkins County have a good shot at advancing as well.
Honestly, I’m not seeing too many upsets for our area girls teams.
Hopefully, will get a few region champions and region runner-ups. That’ll equal a few state tournament home games. I don’t think anyone’s quite ready for basketball to end yet.

The sweetest
Growing up, my father would always weird me out some chilly February morning with a pop quiz I was never fully prepared four.
“Son, you know what today is?”
    “Unh-uh.”
“It’s the best day of the year — pitchers and catchers report — the four sweetest words in the English language.”
    “Whatever old man.”
And sure enough, this week marks the birth of yet another baseball season.
It’s hard as a Braves fans to look towards 2008. No Andruw. No Renteria. No Willie Harris. Tom Glavine’s back — but I think he turns 60 in June.
So for now, I’ll wait to make any crazy baseball predictions. Let’s get through the winter first.
