Well paint me blue and call me a Yankee — the Giants have won the Super Bowl. And all this time I thought Tom Brady was faking it. That’s what Gisele Bundchen told me anyway. Baaaaazing!
As the fiancé — who you all know by now — danced throughout the living room, fielding calls from friends and family, I just sat there and thought this is where I’ll be in 2009. I mean, let’s face it, with He Who Must Not Be Named now coordinating the defensive efforts of the Falcons, we can only assume Atlanta will become the first team in NFL history to go 19-0.
Oh yeah, that makes me 2-2 on the season. Details, details.
Amateur Hoops
I know, I know, we be in football country. But it’s time to wake up and smell the leather and peach baskets.
It’s region tournament time for the local high schools and the home stretch for Georgia Southern. You’re bound to see some excellent basketball over the next few weeks.
We’ll start with the Lady Eagles of GSU, former guests on this program. Hey, you’re in Statesboro, they’re in Statesboro and they’re undefeated at Hanner Fieldhouse. So treat yourself, take your daughter or your little sister. Heck, take your little bro or little cuz. These girls can get after it and will continue to do so for the rest of the year.
On the men’s side, GSU opens a three-game homestand tonight at 7:30. Prediction Numero Uno — the Eagles go 3-0 this week. Count it!
Elsewhere, Portal went undefeated in its region, Statesboro has two fantastic individual stars and Southeast Bulloch is playing tough at just the right time.
The Panthers have taken everybody’s best shot and ran the gauntlet in 3-A undefeated. Monnette Bennett for the Lady Devils and Eric Ferguson for the boys can put up 40 on any given night. The Yellow Jackets are light years ahead of where they were last year.
And hey, don’t forget about the teams at Bulloch Academy and Screven County. They’re poised to make state tourney runs as well.
Which brings me to this: SEB will make the state tournament. Go tell Aunt B, the Jackets will finish in the top four of the Region 3-AA tournament and join the field of 32 of the state’s best Class AA teams. Trust me, or my name isn’t Sir Chaddicus P. Worthington…
Mistakes, mistakes
Last Tuesday I wrote about the SHS boys’ team beating Greenbrier. I also idiotically wrote about an off night for the men in stripes.
Sure, they had a tough night, but that didn’t give me an excuse to throw them under the bus. I’m sure they’d like to see my lazy keester trying to do the job they do for minimal pay and maximum insult.
To make matters worse, I implied that the Blue Devils’ win was aided by the officials’ efforts. That, of course, was not the case.
So in conclusion, don’t be a pretentious writer — like me.
Recruitin’ schmootin’
National Signing Day is Wednesday. For those of you that don’t know, it’s essentially college football’s version of the NFL Draft. It’s also the day when jerks like me get to sit around and tell you why and how which team will win the National Championship in two or three years.
I, for one, am not a fan of recruiting. I’m from the old school, founded perhaps by Erk Russell and Lee Hill, in that you win with what you’re given.
Sure, you should go out and try to coax the best athletes available, but sometimes those athletes are duds, get injured or just plain can’t make it at the next level.
I know I’m in the minority on this one, but it’s not the first time, nor will it be the last. Enjoy scouring the list of new Eagles. I’ll wait until Saturday to tell you what I think.
