Local Roundup: Screven tennis advances

    SYLVANIA — The Screven County Lady Gamecocks had no problems with Pierce County, winning 5-0 in the first round of the GHSA Class AA state tennis tournament.
    Carly Bess Williams (6-0, 6-0), Whitney Waters (6-1, 6-1) and Kate Blackburn (6-0, 6-1) all won in singles play. Natalie Hunter and Katherine Mills (7-5, 6-4) won in doubles, as did Evan Sheppard and Missy Zeagler (6-1, 6-0).
    Screven (17-4) advances to face Dodge County in the second round.

Gators end season
    GRIFFIN — The Bulloch Academy Gators ended their season with a 7-6 loss to the Griffin Christian Crusaders Thursday in the third game of a best-of-three series in the first round of the GISA Class AA state playoffs.
    The Gators (7-15) battled through a back-and-fourth game with Griffin Christian, heading into the seventh inning trailing by two. Michael deloach reached second on a one-out double in the top of the seventh and Win Lee singled to drive him in, but BA grounded into a season-ending double play and the late-inning rally was cut short.
    Bulloch Academy had a 3-2 lead after the first inning. Griffin responded with two in the second, and BA bounced back with a run in both the third and fourth to go up 5-4. A three-run fifth gave GCHS the seven runs they needed for the victory.
    For the Gators, Drew Cheshire and Win Lee were both 2-for-4 and accounted for four of the 10 Bulloch Academy hits.
    Matt Simons was the losing pitcher for BA. He gave up seven runs and eight hits in his five innings of work.

SEB tennis eliminated
    HAZELHURST — The Southeast Bulloch girls tennis team ended their season with a 3-0 loss to Jeff Davis in Wednesday’s first round match in the GHSA Class AA state tournament.
    The Lady Yellow Jackets ended their season 10-10-1.

Metter tennis eliminated
    METTER — The Lady Tigers of Metter fell 3-2 to visiting Appling County Wednesday in the first round of the Class AA GHSA state tournament.
    Alex Hendricks won 5-7, 6-1 and 6-2 in singles play, while Ashley McLamb and Jada McNeely won their doubles match 6-0, 6-0.

Lady Gators beat Highlanders
    HINESVILLE — Eighth grader Laura Minick scored two goals as Bulloch Academy shut out First Presbyterian of Hinesville 6-1 in GISA girls’ varsity soccer action Tuesday.
    Other scorers in the final regular-season match for Bulloch Academy (3-9) were juniors Abi Foy, Kate Martin and Micah Counts and freshman Kaitlin Ellis.
    In earlier junior varsity girls’ action, the Lady Gators tied the Highlanders 0-0 to end their season with a 4-4-1 record
    The Bulloch Academy varsity girls’ squad will travel to Newnan on May 1 to face The Heritage School in the opening round of the GISA Class AA girls’ soccer playoffs.

SHS JV wins tourney
    The Statesboro junior varsity baseball team won the Southeast Bulloch tournament this past weekend at Mill Creek, going a perfect 4-0.
    On Saturday, the Blue Devils beat Jenkins County 12-2. Calk Minnick pitched a complete game and struck out three. Alex Brown was 3-for-4, Aaron Cone was 2-for-3, Rob Pennington was 3-for-3 and Marquis Corprew was 2-for-4.
    Statesboro then beat SEB 16-1 with Josh Blakely pitching a complete game for the Devils. Brown was 2-for-3, Cone was 4-for-4 and Josh Williams was 3-for-3.
    Minnick and Brown were named to the All-Tournament team.

    Scores from Statesboro-Bulloch Parks and Recreation baseball and softball games played Saturday are in.
    In the Midget Baseball league, the Ocean Galley Nationals topped the Gate Petroleum Athletics, 3-1.  The Mill Creek Storage Braves defeated the Quizno's Subs Orioles, 5-2. The H&H Insulation Services Rockies beat the Badcock & More Rangers, 7-5, and The French Quarter Cafe Tigers defeated the Boys & Girls Club Yankees, 11-0.
     In the Junior Baseball league, the Red Sox topped the Sun Systems International Mets, 15-5.
    In the Minor Baseball league, the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro Mariners defeated the Boys & Girls Club Yankees, 15-1.  The Bulloch Co. Sheriff's Ofc/DARE Mets beat the Glenn/Davis & Associates Indians, 23-16.  The Troy Marsh PC Nationals topped the Hagan & Oliver Sheet Metal SandGnats, 15-11.  The Pepperjack's Deli & Grill Red Sox scored 15 to the Kappa Delta Athletics' 3 for the win.  The MKK Construction Braves topped the JR Lotts Construction Co. Inc. Dodgers, 13-1, and the Hackers Giants beat the Lanier Lawn Care Cubs, 12-2.
    In the Midget Softball league, the Central Fence Riptide (Red) defeated the Optimist International Heat, 11-1. The AgSouth Farm Credit Thunder topped the EIS Force, 14-1.  The Bulloch County Dog Hunters Racers scored 4 to the MetLife Auto & Home Insurance Bandits' 2 for the win, and the Midtown Coffeehouse Riptide (Blue) edged past the Brakettes, 8-7.
    In a Midget Baseball make-up game played on Monday, the Badcock & More Rangers defeated the Boys & Girls Club Yankees, 14-0.
