The Screven County Gamecocks swept Berrian County Friday in a double header to advance to the second round of the GHSA Class AA state playoffs.
Allowing five runs in the first three innings, Gamecock starting pitcher Jack Frankhouser closed out Berrian with authority, racking up nine strikeouts and allowing just two hits in the final four frames. He finished with 10 K’s and allowed three earned runs in the 7-5 Screven win.
Jon rash went 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs in game one, Garrett Bates was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and Walker Stuart drove in one and crossed the plate twice.
Barrien made it close in game two.
Screven held on to a 7-1 lead after five innings, but when game two starter cameron Hayden recorded the final out, the tying run was on third. The Gamecocks squeaked out with a 9-8 lead.
Hayden went the distance, striking out 11, walking five and allowing three earned runs. He also went 2-for-3 from the plate and drove in two.
Bates and Rash were a combined 5-for-5, and Rach reached on a BB and scored three times. Bates drove in three.
Across the state, No. 4 seed Appling County swept No. 1 seed Dublin, allowing Screven to stay at home in round two.
The Gamecocks will host Appling on Wednesday, time TBA.
Claxton forces Game Three
The Claxton Tigers dropped the first game of the three-game series in the GHSA Class A playoffs, but bounced back in a big way in Game Two, rocking Baconton Charter 12-2 to force Game Three.
Game One went to extra innings, with Baconton scoring three in the ninth to seal a 9-6 win. Matthew Rogers went 71⁄3 innings while going 3-for-5 with a home run anf four RBIs.
Harley Hendrix got the win in Game Two and finished with a home run and three RBIs. Jamalcom Morgan crushed a grand slam in the 12-2 win. Zac Mosley was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The series concludes today at 2 p.m. with the winner advancing to the second round.
BA needs sweep to advance
After dropping game one to Piedmont Friday, the Bulloch Academy Gators need a sweep to advance to the second round of the GISA Class AA playoffs today.
The Gators will play at 1 p.m.
GHSA track and field results
JEFFERSON — Results are in from Thursday’s opening day action at the GHSA state track and field championships for all classifications.
In the Class A 1600-meter final, James Bramblett of Jenkins County came in seventh with a 4:46.75. Teammate Brandon Wade was 12th at 5:03.89.
In the Class A high jump, Portal’s Justin Raymond was eighth at 6-2. Raymond finished fourth in the lonj jump at 21-10.25 Chris Bellamy of Claxton was fifth in the Class A shot put.
Karl Jones of Screven County tied for fifth in the high jump in Class AA, finishing at 6-4. Teammate Cornelius Roberts was fifth in the long jump at 21-8.
In the Class AAAA high jump, Mario Jackson came in fourth at 6-4. Jackson finished eighth in the long jump at 21-11.5. Teammate Patrick Jenkins came in third in the triple jump with a 46-11.25 while Jackson landed at 44-2.5, goof enough for seventh.
Statesboro is tied for fifth with 10 points, Screven County is in 12th with 3.5 points, Portal is in eighth with 4 points and Claxton is in 10th with 2 points in their respective classifications.
All schools ran qualifying on Friday for today’s running event finals, beginning at noon.
3-A All-Region baseball team
The 2008 3-A All-Region baseball team was announced this past week.
Brett Rivers and Derrick Finch made the squad from Portal. From Jenkins County, Boyd Sasser, Zac Clark, Justin Lanier and Caleb Chance were named.
From the co-champion Claxton team, Kelvin Goodson, Matthew Rogers, Harley Hendrix, John Peel, Brandon Stanfield and Kenny Deloach all had their names listed.
BA girls beat First Presbyterian
HINESVILLE — Bulloch Academy knocked in three first-half goals as the Lady Gators beat First Presbyterian of Hinesville 4-2 in girls’ soccer action Thursday.
Freshmen Kaylee Sheppard and Kaitlyn Ellis, along with eighth grader Haley Burke, gave Bulloch a 3-1 halftime lead. Senior Abi Foy added an insurance goal in the second half.
Bulloch Academy, which finished third in Region 2-AA with a 4-4 record, travels to Sandy Spring today for a playoff match with Holy Spirit Prep in the opening round of the GISA Class AA girls’ soccer playoffs. First kick is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

The SprintSouth AAU track and field program is still accepting registration for the summer.

Lee Hill hoops camp
Statesboro boys’ basketball coach Lee Hill will hold a his summer basketball camp, starting May 26 and running through May 30.
Rising 2nd through 5th graders will practice from 8-11 a.m., while rising 6th through 9th graders will go from 1-4 p.m.

The first-ever wrestling camp, conducted by coach Tomlin, coach Travers and several present and past BA wrestlers, runs from July 7-10 from 9 a.m. to noon. Tomlin and Travers are former Team Georgia wrestlers with NHSCA All-American honors. This instructional opportunity will provide campers with basic wrestling fundamentals in a positive and fun atmosphere. Wrestling, according to Tomlin,
helps improve strength, cardio fitness, quickness, motivation, self confidence and motivation.
Campers will receive a camp t-shirt, a daily light snack and a certificate of completion of the camp.
