Georgia Southern announced kickoff times for the six home games in the upcoming football season Wednesday.
The first three home games, all during the month of September, will start at 6 p.m. The final three homes games are scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff. Georgia Southern plays three of its first four games at Paulson Stadium. All times are subject to change due to television broadcasts.
On Saturday, April 14, in conjunction with spring football practice, Georgia Southern will host Eagle Athletics Fest 2007.
The public is invited to the football scrimmage at Paulson Stadium, starting at 9:30 a.m. Season tickets will be on sale and it is also the Pick-A-Seat Day promotion.
Following the scrimmage, the public is invited to an Open House at the Parrish Football Center. The public can meet head coach Chris Hatcher and his coaching staff, in addition to taking a tour of the Parrish Center and see the new trophy and photo displays, including display cases honoring the late coach Erk Russell.
Starting at 12:30 p.m. the annual Clements Crazies Tailgate Party begins. There will be picnic food for the entire family near J.I. Clements Stadium, and the GSU cheerleaders, pep band and GUS will be in attendance. That party precedes the Georgia Southern baseball game at 1:30 p.m. against Southern Conference rival College of Charleston. SHS beats Evans
The Statesboro boys soccer team beat Evans 2-1 in Columbia County Tuesday evening in a shoot out.
Ten minutes into play, Thomas Eisenhart scored the only goal of the game for the Blue Devils on an assist by Jack Kimes. Evans was unable to get on the scoreboard until late in regulation time. With 3:27 on the clock, the Knights tied the score, sending the game into overtime.
Two five-minute overtime periods ensued, yielding no score. The Blue Devils did control the ball the majority of the second overtime, but were not able to send the ball into the goal.
A shoot out followed the second overtime period. The Knights connected on their first penalty kick but Eisenhart answered for the Blue Devils. Evans scored on their second penalty kick and Lindsey Martin connected for Statesboro. Statesboro keeper Jake Lanier saved the third kick shot by Evans, while Ben Elgass put the ball into the net for the Blue Devils, giving Statesboro the advantage. In the final round of penalty kicks, Lanier had another save and José Rubio connected for SHS for the win.
Statesboro will host Richmond Hill Saturday at 1 p.m.
SHS Track and Field results
HINESVILLE — The Statesboro boys track team defeated Bradwell in a dual meet, 67-65, in Hinesville on Tuesday. The Bradwell girls defeated the SHS girls by a score of 70 - 53.
First place finishers for the boys included: Paul Welle (800m; 3200m), Justin Jordan (1600m), Tyrone McCoy (400m), Orlando Rock (110m hurdles), Mario Jackson (long jump) and Patrick Jenkins (triple jump). The 400-meter relay team of Antonio Munro, Calan Hilton, Patrick Jenkins and Jackson also took first as did Jordan, Matt Hill, Milton and McCoy in the 1600-meter relay.
First place finishers for the Lady Blue Devils included: Trensherra Rogers (100m hurdles; 300m hurdles), Morgan VanGorder (3200m), Nora Billups (1600m), Briana Ross (400m) and Lywanna Melvin (discus).
Statesboro will be in action on Saturday at the Joe Turner/Jon Young Invitational on the campus of Savannah State University. The meet begins at 9 a.m. and will host around 15 teams from the Coastal Empire Area. Statesboro placed second in this meet in 2006.
SEB Track wins another
The Southeast Bulloch track teams hosted Claxton and Calvary on Wednesday with both boys and girls teams coming away with wins.
The boys scored 94 to Claxton’s 67 and Calvary Day’s five.
Tharon Davis placed first in the triple jump and long jump. Dray Lingle won the 100-meter and the 200-meter.
Josh McKeehan finished first in th shot put with Ryan Dawson taking second. Dawson also finished second in the discus.
In the pole vault Kevin Hunnicutt finished first in front of Dustin Plankenhorn. Southeast took first and second in the 100m relay.
Nathan Davis took first in the 1600m and Patrick Ivey took first in the 400m. Brandon Dominy finished first in the 110m hurdles and Cameron Harris won the 800-meter. Dominy also took first in the 300m hurdles.
Gerald Williams took second in the 200m and SEB finished first in the 400m relay.
The Lady Yellow Jackets defeated Claxton 77-69 with Calvary scoring 20 points.
Alesha Mercer took second in the long jump, second in the 100-meter and second in the 200-meter.
Brittany Carter finished second in the triple jump, first in the 400m and first in the 300m hurdles.
Sarah Herndon won both the discus and shot put events with Katie Schuman finishing second in the discus and Shamonica Tremble taking third in the shot put.
In the pole vault, Candace McElveen took first while Victoria Bowen was second. Audrey Smith took second in the 1600m with Sarah Burgess coming in third. Smith won the 3200m with Burgess coming in second.
Candace Pierce was second in the 100m hurdles and Rebecca Harville was third in the high jump.
In the 100-meter relay, SEB took second with Mercer, Tremble, Carter and Asha Rawls. Southeast also came in second in the 400m relay.
Both teams return to action at the Parker White Relays in Swainsboro at 10 a.m.
Claxton defeats Liberty
The Claxton tennis teams picked up wins against Liberty on Tuesday.
The boys (8-0) won 4-1 with Thomas Thigpen (6-1, 6-0), Justin Stewart (6-0, 6-0) and Blake Cravey (6-1, 6-0) winning in singles play. In doubles, Shoheb Punjuni and Robert Stallins won 6-3, 6-2.
The Lady Tigers (1-7) won their match 3-2 with Mallory Stewart (6-0, 6-3) and Hannah Lynch (6-0, 6-0) winning in singles play. Keirsten Sheffield and Stacy Williams took their doubles match 6-3, 3-1 before play was suspended.
Claxton will travel to Richmond Hill today for a 4pm match.
Jones tabbed SoCon ‘Golfer of the Week’
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Georgia Southern golfer Bryan Jones was named Southern Conference ‘Men’s Golfer of the Week,’ it was announced Wednesday, after tying for seventh among the nation’s top golfers at last week’s 28th Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational.
Starting on the back nine, the senior from Atlanta fired the weekend’s low and a career-low 6-under 66 in the third and final round, finishing the tournament at an even-par 216. He jumped from tying for 43rd place on Saturday to tying for seventh after firing five consecutive birdies on holes 12 through 16, and later shooting an ace on the third hole. It was Jones’ first career hole-in-one.
“He played a great round on Sunday,” said head coach Larry Mays, “and was very focused going into the last round. He’s played three great tournaments this spring so far, and hopefully he can continue that going through the rest of the season.”
Jones’ third round, combined with a strong team performance, helped the Eagles jump from 14th place on Saturday to a final seventh-place finish. The Eagles finished the 54-hole tournament recording a 23-over 887, posting wins over three opponents ranked in the top-25, including No. 13 Tennessee, No. 15 North Carolina, and No. 19 Minnesota, according to last week’s Golf Stat polls.
The Eagles have less than two weeks to prepare for their next competition, March 30 through April 1, at the Administaff Augusta State Invitational in Evans, Ga.

Southeast Bulloch Middle School will be hosting the Coastal Empire Middle School Region track meet on Saturday at Southeast Bulloch High School. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. at the Southeast Bulloch High School track complex.
Participating teams will be Burke County, Ebenezer, Effingham, Langston Chapel, Richmond Hill, Screven County, South Effingham, Southeast Bulloch and William James. There is a $3 admission charge.
