Carter Collins, assistant golf coach at Georgia Southern, qualified for the U.S. Amateur championships this past weekend at the Willow Creek Golf Club in Knoxville, Tenn., during the USGA South Sectional qualifier.
Collins, who recently competed in the Georgia Amatuer championships in Macon, eagled the final hole of his second round to force a three-way playoff for the final spot in the competition. He shot a first round 69 and a second round 64.
The 2008 U.S. Amateur will be held Aug. 18-24 at Pinehurst in North Carolina. Collins finished one stroke behind Nicholas Cowper of Atlanta and two strokes behind Jason Millard of Murfreesboro, Tenn., who will also compete at Pineurst.
Portal softball info
The Portal softball team will hold a fundraiser during the school’s open house today from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. They’ll be hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and drinks served to help support the Lady Panthers.
Tryout for the PHS varsity squad will run from Aug. 4-6 at 3:30 p.m. at the softball field. All interested must bring their completed physical’s, insurance forms and permission slips if they have not already done so.
SHS softball tryouts
Statesboro High will hold softball tryouts this Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Mill Creek Park, Field No. 1. All forms and $25 participation fee must be turned in prior to the tryouts.

SEBMS softball tryouts
Tryouts for the Southeast Bulloch middle school softball team will be held Monday-Wednesday from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
All participants must have the parent permission form completed by parent or guardian and physical form completed by a doctor.
WJMS softball tryouts
William James Middle School will be holding softball tryouts Tuesday-Thursday from 4-6 p.m. at Luetta Moore Park.
In addition, an optional practice will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at Luetta Moore Park.
All interested girls should bring all forms completed and insurance money to the field in order to practice and/or tryout.
LCMS softball tryouts
Langston Chapel Middle School softball tryouts will begin Wednesday. Girls interested need to have an updated physical and complete the athletic paperwork before trying out. Packets are available at LCMS or you can contact coach Danielle White at the school for more information (681-8779).
Match Play tourney
The 2008 Savannah/Hilton Head City Am Match Play will be held Aug. 8-10 at Crosswinds Golf Club.
Entry fee for the tournament is $200 which includes 18 holes and at least one Match Play round starting on Saturday. The tournament is benefiting the Second Harvest Food Bank of Coastal Georgia.

8th Annual Brooklet Peanut 5K Run/Walk
The 8th Annual Brooklet Peanut 5K Run/Walk will be held on Aug. 16. The race is set to begin at Brooklet Elementary School at 7 a.m..
The cost is $15 until Aug. 11 and $20 after Aug. 11. Trophies and gift cards will be awarded to the top three male and female overall runners and top three male and female masters overall. Trophies will be awarded to the top three males and females in each age division. Proceeds benefit the Southeast Bulloch Cross Country and Soccer programs. Travel Team tryouts
Around the Horn Baseball/Softball, travel teams with the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation, will be having open tryouts on Aug. 16 at Mill Creek Regional Park. Around the Horn will be instructed by former college and professional athletes who stress fundamentals and skill development.
The team will be competing in the USSSA Baseball Division of 11, 12, 13, and 14-under and ASA Softball Division of 12, 14, and 16-under. The tryout times are: 11 and 12-under boys at 10 a.m. and 13 and 14-under boys at noon. BA Booster membership drive
The Bulloch Academy Boosters Club is currently holding its annual membership drive.
The drive provides financial support for the school’s 31 varsity and junior varsity athletic teams and squads. The Boosters Club helps to provide equipment, uniforms and other necessities of the various sports. Financial and volunteer support from the Boosters also helps to maintain and improve the school’s athletic fields and facilities.
Six levels of memberships are available and, with each level, there are different benefits such as season passes, listing in the Fall Sports program, discounts on Booster concession items and merchandise, “Booster Board” display, press box signage, banners for athletic fields, preferred parking and other items.
