Former Georgia Southern University baseball standout Brian Rogers got the call all baseball players await, again. For the second time in his career, and first this season, Rogers received the call to join the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Rogers spent the final month of the 2006 season with the Pirates when the team expanded its roster. He flew to St. Louis on Tuesday (May 22) and joined Pittsburgh in its series against the Cardinals. Rogers pitched one-third of an inning Tuesday, allowing one hit, but the Pirates dropped a 9-4 decision.
Rogers was off to an impressive start in Indianapolis, picking up two saves with a 1.35 ERA in 20 innings. Last year he compiled an 8.31 ERA in 8 2/3 innings over 10 relief appearances. He will be used primarily in a set up role.
Following the 2003 season Rogers was drafted in the 11th round by Detroit. He was traded last July 31 at the MLB trade deadline from the Tigers to Pittsburgh for Sean Casey. Rogers spent one month in Indianapolis before getting the call to Pittsburgh.
SEB Honors baseball players
Southeast Bulloch High School had its awards banquet Sunday, with the following students recieving the following awards: Fisher Strickland (MVP), Matt Conner (Best Offensive Player), Jeramy Smith (Best Defensive Player), David McCarthy (Most Improved), Fisher Strickland (Stone Cold Pitching) and Justin Daniels (Yellow Jacket Award. For the junior varisty, the following players were honored: Tony Raymond (Most Outstanding), James Nevil (Most Improved), Tucker Bettis (Yellow jacket Award), Jordan Davis (Stone Cold Pitching) and Jared Page (Best Offensive).

In the Minor Boys League, the Troy Marsh PC Nationals topped the Boys & Girls Club Yankees, 7-0. The MKK Construction Braves beat out the JR Lott's Construction Co. Inc. Dodgers, 17-13. The Hackers Giants defeated the Pepperjack's Deli & Grill Red Sox 11-7. The Bulloch Co. Sheriff's Ofc./DARE Mets edged pasted the Preferred Collision Center Royals, 9-8. In another close game between the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro Mariners and the Kappa Delta Athletics, the Mariners won 7-6. Finally, the Glenn/Davis & Associates Indians scored 6 to the Hagen & Oliver Sheet Metal SandGnats' 5 for the win.
In the Midget Boys League, the French Quarter Cafe Tigers defeated the Boys & Girls Club Yankees, 12-5, and the Badcock & More Rangers scored 10 to the H&H Insulation Services Rockies' 2 for the game.
Statesboro basketball camp
Statesboro head coach Lee Hill will conduct the Statesboro Summer Basketball Camp beginning Monday, June 4 and running through Friday, June 8.
Rising second through fifth graders will practice from 8-11 a.m., while rising sixth through ninth graders will practice from 1-4 p.m.
Admission is $80.
SEB basketball camp
Southeast Bulloch’s “NEST OF PRIDE” Youth Basketball Camp for boys and girls rising to the fourth through eighth grades will begin Wednesday, May 30 and run through through Friday, June 1. The camp begins daily at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 12:30 p.m. The cost of the camp is $40 per camper. Statesboro baseball summer camps
Statesboro summer baseball camps will be held June 4-6 (ages 6-8) and June 11-13 (ages 9-12) at Mill Creek Field Two.
The cost is $45, and the camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon.
You can register at the camp on the first day by arriving at 8:30 a.m.
Panthers invited to USA Junior Nationals
After an outstanding performance in the USA Junior Nationals all-state high school basketball competition at Georgia Tech, Portal's Jaleisia Coleman, Sacona Sheffield, Bridgett Oglesby and Kanesha Eason have been invited — based on their performance — to participate in the prestigious USA Junior Nationals International Sports Festival in Columbus, OH., from July 23-29.
Based in Ann Arbor, Mich., the USA Junior Nationals provides one of the top amatuer competitions in the United States and offers its program to all athletes who have high talent level in basketball and ant to develop their skills and techniques through statewide, national and international competition.

SEB baseball camp
Southeast Bulloch will hold its second annual baseball camp beginning Tuesday, May 29 and running through Thursday, May 31.
The camp is open to rising third through eighth graders and will be held from 4-7 p.m., focusing on hitting, fielding and fundamentals of the game. Cost is $50 and a snack will be provided. Contact Stephen Hoyle at 764-3826 for more information.
SEB Tennis Camp
Returning again to Southeast Bulloch this summer is the Yellow Jacket tennis camps. This summer’s sessions are offered at the SEB Tennis Courts.
On Wednesday, May 30 through Friday, June 1 from 8:30-11:30 a.m., the tennis camp will be led by coach Wayne Pruitt, head tennis coach for Southeast Bulloch High School’s girls and boys teams. This camp is for this year’s third through eighth graders for the 2006-07 school year.

BA FUNdamental football camp
Bulloch Academy assistant head football coach Ronnie Hodges invites local and area boys and girls going into grades second-fifth to sign up for the Gator FUNdamental football day camp.
The annual camp, conducted by Coach Hodges and several present and past BA football players, runs from June 18-21 from 9 a.m. to noon. This instructional opportunity will provide campers with basic football fundamentals in a relaxed, fun-filled environment. Campers will receive a camp t-shirt and opportunities to win awards in various skill-level competitions.

Metter hoops camp
Metter High School will hold a basketball camp starting Tuesday, May 29 and running through Thursday May 31 to be held and Metter Middle School.
The camp is open to boys and girls ages five-13 and will run from 8 a.m to 11 a.m. The cost of the camp is $45 before May 29 and $50 after that date.

Running camp offers scholarships
Mars Hill, N.C. — Mountain High Running Camp, in Mars Hill, N.C., is once again offering camp scholarship opportunities to four deserving high school cross country runners.
Selected runners will be awarded tuition for one of the two weeks of camp held July 9-14 and July 16-22. Scholarships are awarded based upon need, teammate participation and recommendations. Final applications are now being evaluated for the Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp. The Ten Star All Star Summer Basketball Camp is by invitation only. Hawks confident with draft's third pick
ATLANTA (AP) — General manager Billy Knight isn’t naming names but he’s confident the Atlanta Hawks will get a good player with the third pick in the June 28 NBA draft.
‘‘We know we’ll get a good player,’’ Knight said at a news conference the day after the NBA held its draft lottery Tuesday night, with the Hawks coming away with the No. 3 and 11 overall picks.
‘‘We don’t have any idea who we might pick,’’ Knight said. ‘‘We just got the pick last night. We can’t bring players in until after the Orlando camp, after the (June) 5th. But we are going to have more assets.’’ He said Atlanta could be looking for almost anything in the draft.
He mentioned a point guard and a big man and noted that the team has some solid young forwards on the team — Josh Smith, who averaged 16.4 points a game last year, and Marvin Williams, who averaged 13.1.
