Lanier, Akins win GISA state doubles title

    Kacie Lanier and Kate Anna Akins ran the table Wednesday at the GISA Class AA state tournament to become doubles state champions in tennis.
    Akins and Lanier lost only one game en route to the title, beating Becky Glover and Debbie Romero of Heritage 4-6, 6-1 and 6-4 in the final match.
    “This was a strong a field as its been,” said BA coach Joe Blakenbaker. “The level of every team has improved so much over the years. I think that made (Lanier and Akins) a little nervous and tentative at first, but then they settled down.”
    Lanier and Akins had to beat Heritages’ No. 1 doubles in the semifinals to advance to the championship. Lanier, a senior, and Akins, a freshman, reeled off wins over doubles teams from Arlington and Southwest Georgia to go 4-0 on the day.

BA’s Spigener, Mallard finish runner-up
    Rob Mallard and William Spigener fell 6-4, 6-4 to John Allen and Charlie Schockner of Frederica in the championship match of the GISA Class AA tennis tournament Wednesday.
    Spigener and Mallard came into the tournament as a No. 3 seed, but knocked off three higher seeds to advance to the final.
    “Right now they’re disappointed,” said BA coach Joe Blakenbaker. “But they should be proud of all that they accomplished this season.”

Lady Yellow Jackets advance
    The Southeast Bulloch girls tennis team defeated Westside 3-2 Wednesday to advance to the semifinals of the region 3-AA tennis tournament in Augusta.
      Southeast won both its doubles matches after picking up a defualt win in singles play. Sara Ervin and Sarah Burkhart (6-1, 6-3) and Laura Bennett and Kaitlin Brannen (6-2, 6-3) picked up the crucial victories to keep SEB (10-7-1) alive.
    The Lady Jackets will face Screven County today at 10:30 a.m. in Augusta.
    
Lady Tigers advance
    The Metter girls tennis team defeated Josey 5-0 to advance to the semifinals of the Region 3-AA tennis tournament on Wednesday.
    Alex Hendrix, Adrienne Lanier and Anna Williams all won in singles play. Amy Nagel and Faith Coleman won in doubles play, as did Ashley McLamb and Jada McNeely.
    The Lady Tigers (12-1) resume play today at 10:30 a.m. in Augusta against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
    Other matches today include the Southeast Bulloch boys vs. Westside/Swainsboro winner at 9:30 a.m. and both Screven County teams will play as well.

Claxton boys claim region runner-up
    The Claxton boys tennis team advanced to the region 3-A tournament final with a 3-0 win over Bryan County. Justin Stewart (6-0, 6-1), Thomas Thigpen (6-4, 6-2) and Blake Cravey (6-0, 6-2) all won in singles play.
    Both Doubles matches were suspended after three wins were secured for CHS.
    In the finals, Claxton lost to Savannah Country Day 5-0. The Hornets are ranked No. 1 in the state on gasports.com coaches poll and Claxton is ranked No. 5.  The Tigers will advance to the first round of state tournament next week and will host the No. 3 seed from Region 2-A.  The date and time for the first round of state will be announced Friday.
