The Georgia Southern women’s basketball team will continue its four-game road trip today in a Southern Conference scuffle at Furman. Tip-off versus the Paladins is slated for 7 p.m. at Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C.
Georgia Southern (14-9, 10-2 SoCon) recently edged Wofford, Saturday (Feb. 9), by a 62-56 decision at Benjamin Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, S.C. Senior guard Shawnda Atwood (Pensacola, Fla.) paced the team with 14 points and eight rebounds. With the win, Georgia Southern extended its win streak to three games. It is the ninth Lady Eagle victory in the last 10 contests.
Furman (8-15, 3-9 SoCon) recently defeated College of Charleston Saturday, 63-55, at Timmons Arena as part of a four-game homestand. Chrissy Phelps scored 16 points, which was enough to surpass the 1,000 career-points milestone.
Georgia Southern leads the all-time series, 23-17, having last defeated the Paladins earlier this year (Jan. 14) by a 59-53 decision at Hanner Fieldhouse. Furman holds a 9-8 edge over the Lady Eagles in games played at Timmons Arena, with its most recent victory over GSU occurring Jan. 2007 in a 75-63 Paladin win. The last time Georgia Southern claimed a victory in Greenville happened during the 2003 season when the Lady Eagles edged the Paladins 66-64.
Senior guard Tiffany Brown (Waxhaw, N.C.) leads GSU with 12.1 points per game, followed by her classmate, Atwood, who averages 10.2. Atwood pulls down a team-best 5.8 rebounds per game and is among the league leaders in points and rebounds per contest. Sophomore Carolyn Whitney (Duluth, Ga.) leads the team with 3.3 assists per game and is the current league leader in assist to turnover ratio (2.0).
Leading the Paladins in scoring is Kali Holtfreter with 11.2 points per game. Teammate Katie Johnson pulls down 6.1 rebounds per contest to lead the team, while Chrissy Phelps dishes out a team-best 3.9 assists per game.
A 1985 graduate of Louisiana Tech, head coach Rusty Cram is in his 12th season at the helm of the Lady Eagles and carries a 181-160 career and school record.
