DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. — Georgia Southern's golf team came up one spot short of defending its Southern Conference  title Tuesday, finishing second in the SoCon Tournament.
GSU shot 289 the final day to jump into second place, but was unable to overcome Chattanooga. The Mocs shot 281 in the final round to cement their victory. Chattanooga shot 3-under-par 861 in the tournament.
“We played solid this week and finished second to a good Chattanooga team with one of the top 15 players in the country playing at his best,” GSU golf head coach Larry Mays said. “I am proud of our effort and excited about the future, as we have a great base of young talent to work with the next few years. This finish was a step in the right direction, as we put together some solid rounds on a tough golf course under championship conditions.”
GSU shot 16-over-par 880 in the tournament. The second-place finish is the highest finish this season for the Eagles.
The St. Simons Island freshmen tandem of Zach Hartman and Scott Wolfes both played some of their best golf of the year. Wolfes shot a 70 on the final day and Hartman shot a 72 as both finished tied for fourth at 3-over par.
Both Wolfes and Hartman were honored on the SoCon All-Freshmen Team. Wolfes was named Freshman of the Year. He was joined by senior GSU Lewis Gruber on the All-SoCon Team. Gruber shot 7-over-par 223 to finish tied for 19th.
GSU sophomore Hayden Anderson and junior Blake Olson tied for 27th. Anderson shot 72 in the final round. Olson shot  77.
