STATESBORO, Ga. -- Mrs. Olive Hughes Schilling, age 95, died Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at her residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. She was born in London, England, on July 3, 1922.
She was educated in London and served in the British Army for three and a half years during World War II. After the war, she married and moved to the United States.
She was the secretary to President Charles P. Hogarth at Gulf Park College in Long Beach, Miss., for several years and was with Gulfport Creosoting Company, later bought by Crown Zellerbach Paper Company, retiring as purchasing supervisor for Crown Zellerbach.
Olive was an active member of her church, St. Peter’s By the Sea in Gulfport. She was also an auxiliary member of the Gulfport Yacht Club and a member of Friends of the Library of Pass Christian, Mississippi. She also volunteered with Feed My Sheep for many years.
Mrs. Schilling moved to Statesboro from Pass Christian, Miss., with her husband, Jack, in February 2006 after Hurricane Katrina.
She is preceded in death by her husband, John Arthur Schilling; her parents, John and Harriet Hughes; and two sisters, Henrietta Lillian Hernandez Hughes and Dora Frances Francis.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Hughes Innes and Lynn Innes of Plano, Texas; two granddaughters, Brittany Lyn Innes and Chelsea Lyn Odom of Plano, Texas; a niece, Marilyn Hutton-Squire of Cape Town, South Africa; a nephew, Jonathan Frances of London, England; and two stepdaughters, Carol Schilling Dew of Monroe, Georgia; and Sandra Schilling Rakestraw of Statesboro.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Statesboro, Georgia.
