Margaret Strickland Wynn
Margaret Strickland Wynn, age 94, died Saturday morning, January 19, 2019, at her home in Augusta.
Margaret was the wife of Clarence J. “Jack” Wynn Jr. for over 70 years and the daughter of James H. and Grace Mulling Strickland, all of whom preceded her in death.
She was born and raised in the Sinkhole District and graduated from Register High School and Georgia Teachers College.
Margaret taught school in Glynn and Bulloch counties and later served as H.P. Womack’s administrative assistant in the Bulloch County school superintendent’s office until the birth of her son, Jim.
Margaret devoted the next 18 years of her life as a wife, homemaker and mother. She returned to work with Jack as the office manager of Wynn-Ansley Cadillac-Oldsmobile until her retirement in 1980.
She lived in Statesboro for all of her married life until she and Jack moved to Augusta in 2009.
Margaret was a devoted member of Statesboro First United Methodist Church and of the Dan Williams Sunday School Class. She had previously served as leader of the Junior and Intermediate Sunday School departments and as an active member of United Methodist Women in her church.
Margaret was also a charter member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club and a member of the Archibald Bulloch Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
In addition to her family and community, Margaret valued an immaculately clean home, the perfect shade of pink nail polish and lipstick, her funky eye glasses and her extensive collection of shoes and books.
She was well known for both her needlework and culinary skills, with pecan pie, pimento cheese and peanut brittle being the family favorites.
Surviving are her son, James J. Wynn Sr., M.D., and his wife, Lana Jackson Wynn, M.D, of Jackson, Mississippi; her grandchildren, James J. Wynn Jr. of Kansas City, Robert S. Wynn, his wife, Katie, and their children, Rob, George and Elizabeth of Augusta; Margaret Wynn Mitchell, her husband, Parker, and their children, Evelyn and Virginia of Atlanta; and Mary Grace Wynn of Asheville, North Carolina. She is also survived by Pamela Thomas Wynn of Augusta, a dear friend and the mother of her grandchildren. Her great-grandchildren will remember her fondly as their GiGi.
The family would like to particularly recognize the wonderful care given to Margaret for many years by Diane Johnson and Leon Lewis.
Margaret will be laid to rest next to Jack in a graveside service in Eastside Cemetery on Monday, January 28, at 11:30 a.m.
The family will receive visitors at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m.
