Kathleen "Katie" O’Grady
REGISTER, Ga. -- Kathleen "Katie" O’Grady passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, November 10, 2018, at home.
She was born on April 6, 1951, in Djakarta, Indonesia. As the child of a U.S. Foreign Service officer, she grew up all over the world. She had lived in South Georgia since 1987.
She is survived by her husband, Lyndy Brannen of Register; her daughter, Wendy Forgacs (John Hayes) of Statesboro; her granddaughters, Grace and Rose Kazak, both of Statesboro; her brother, Daniel O’Grady (Debi) of Falls Church, Va.; her niece, Caitlin O’Grady (Matthew Wrelton) of London, England; her niece, Erin O’Grady Wong (Bryson) of Alexandria, Va.; a bevy of “former” nephews with their wives and children and more friends than many of us are blessed to have.
She is predeceased by her father, Walter J. O’Grady; and mother, Margaret “Peg” O’Grady.
Now that we have the requisite facts out of the way, Katie was the self-proclaimed “Queen of Hallway” at Bradley/Dixie Companies, where she worked for the last 25 years.
Her unwavering devotion to the Cleveland Browns (she was president of the Statesboro Browns Backers) left her pining for the mid-80s, when they were consistently in the playoffs, and optimistic for next play, quarter, game or season as the situation warranted.
She was an avid baseball fan, too, (Savannah Bananas, Cleveland Indians and Washington Nationals being her teams of choice).
Her zest for life, infectious laugh, quick wit and unflinching dedication to her granddaughters, paired with her ever-so-cool purple hair and sticker-festooned Fiat, earned her the unofficial designation of Coolest Nana in Statesboro.
She was a voracious reader; a pen snob (preferring fountain pens to ballpoint, a quirk she passed down to her daughter); and author of the best hand-written notes ever, which often became personal treasures for the lucky recipient.
Over the years, she and Lyndy provided a loving home to countless stray and/or rescue dogs and cats. Landing at their house was like hitting the pet jackpot and there was always room for one more.
For someone with such tiny feet (size 5.5/6), she leaves all of us with some pretty big shoes to fill.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to encourage a donation in her name to Coastal Pet Rescue, Wreaths Across America Beaufort, SC (online or contact Wendy for form) or to Ogeechee Area Hospice., P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.
A wake celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, November 24, at El Sombrero, 406 Fair Road, Statesboro, GA, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m.
