Two men believed to be responsible for breaking into a car at the U.S. 302 North Ogeechee River landing Saturday are behind bars, thanks to cooperation between Bulloch County Sheriff’s deputies and Statesboro Police officers.
Keith Allan Sheffield, 25, Kenfield Road, Twin City; and Justin Ray Watkins, 20, Joy Street, Portal, were both arrested after Statesboro Police found their Jeep – as well as items stolen from the victim’s car – at Eagle Inn in Statesboro, said Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson.
Deputies responded Saturday to the river landing and spoke with witnesses, who gave a “very specific description of the suspects and their vehicle,” he said. A lookout was posted for the red Jeep Cherokee, and “several hours later, officers of the Statesboro Police Department were able to locate the vehicle at Eagle Inn on South Main Street.”
Both Bulloch County Sheriff’s deputies and Statesboro Police officers responded to the motel, where they found property that had been stolen from the victim’s car “in both the Jeep and a room” at the motel, Anderson said.
This evidence led to Sheffield being arrested on charges of entering auto and giving false information to law enforcement, and Watkins being charged with felony theft by receiving stolen property.
Other evidence led to the possibility of another victim. Bulloch County Sheriff’s Inv. Jared Akins said he is seeking Cindy Carol Morgan, who formerly resided on Jim Waters Road, who may have been a victim of crimes committed by the suspects, he said. “Ms. Morgan is asked to contact Inv. Akins at 764-1789,” Anderson said.
He reminded citizens to record serial numbers for all their valuables, and to photograph items of high value in case they are stolen. He also said citizens need to remember to lock their home and car doors, and repot suspicious activity or persons.
“I would like to thank the Statesboro Police Department for assistance in this case,” he said.
