The identity of a man who was the target of a search Friday following a three-county chase and crash near Statesboro is yet unknown, said Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson.
Deputies took the female driver into custody, but the male passenger fled on foot after snatching a white backpack from the wrecked car. As he ran, he was talking on a cellphone, and Anderson said he believes the man called someone to pick him up and is no longer in the area.
Travyna Denise Brown, 21, of Columbus, Ohio, was driving the car in Burke County before noon on Friday when Georgia State Patrol Post 21 Sgt. Chris Rodewalt attempted to stop her for speeding. She did not stop but instead sailed through Jenkins County and into Bulloch County, approaching speeds of 130 mph, often on the wrong side of the road, before crashing on Highway 25 (Highway 80 West) near Rolling Woods subdivision near Statesboro.
Deputies, state troopers and other law enforcement officers searched for the man for hours using K-9 units and a helicopter, to no avail.
Brown was taken to the Bulloch County Jail on several traffic charges.Anderson said she has not been fully cooperative in helping identify and locate the man who fled.
