A Statesboro man was killed early Friday morning when a truck rear-ended a sanitation truck upon which he was riding.
Georgia State Patrol Trooper First-Class John Priest responded to the scene about four miles north of Claxton near Red Clay Road just before 7 a.m. Friday to find William Stacy Wilkerson, 38, U.S. 301 South, Register, had been fatally injured when a pickup truck slammed into the rear of a Sullivan Environmental Services truck upon which he had been riding and working.
Wilkerson was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
The accident occurred when the driver of a red 2006 Dodge Ram, Stacy Brown, 36, Edgar Hodges Road, Claxton, struck the rear end of the 1999 International garbage truck owned by Sullivan Environmental Services, driven by Carl Harris, 55, of Register.
Harris was not injured, nor was a second passenger, John Roberson, 21, Wigfall Road, Register, who was also riding on  the back of the truck, Priest said.
Brown’s truck not only struck the larger vehicle, but struck Wilkerson as he stood on the back of it, he said.
Wilkerson was ejected after impact, he said.
The accident is being jointly investigated by the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team #4 from Reidsville, Priest said.
Charges are pending against Brown, he said.
