A man found "squatting" in a vacant Lanier Drive apartment Monday was jailed on burglary and drug charges.
Someone called Statesboro police officers to Park Place Apartments around 5:30 a.m. Monday, where they found Willie Charles Peoples asleep in what was supposed to be an empty apartment, said Statesboro police Capt. James Winskey.
Peoples, 36, is listed in Bulloch County Jail records as having a Lanier Drive address, but he did not live at the Park Place apartment where he was found, Winskey said.
After a brief search, officers found Peoples with a small amount of drugs and drug paraphernalia, he said.
Officers took Peoples into custody and then to jail. He was charged with burglary in the first degree, a felony, for breaking into the apartment. Peoples was also charged with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, and possession/use of drug-related objects.
He remains in the Bulloch County Jail without bond, awaiting further court action, according to jail records.
