A Baxley woman was killed Wednesday night after being struck by a semi truck.
Georgia State Patrol Post 45 Trooper First-Class Tyler Rickman said Shelia Rawls, 41, was walking in the roadway around 7:45 p.m. on Hwy. 301 South near Agri-Supply and Coley Boyd Road when the truck hit her.
The driver, whose identity he withheld, braked when he saw Rawls but was unable to avoid striking her, he said.
Rickman said Rawls had been picked up and taken to the hospital earlier Wednesday by Statesboro police, but had apparently been released from the hospital.
Information regarding why officers took Rawls to the hospital was not immediately available Thursday afternoon, said Statesboro Police Sgt. Jake Saxon.
Rickman said someone had offered Rawls a night’s stay at a local hotel, but she refused, adamant about walking back to Baxley, he said.
No charges are expected to be filed against the truck driver, he said.
