Mornings unPHILtered - Taste of Downtown to return
Event part of First Friday on March 5
W BIZ MULDREW Web
Allen Muldrew

The guest on the Mornings unPHILtered show was Allen Muldrew, the Director of Statesboro’s Downtown Development Authority. Muldrew came on the show to talk about the First Friday event on March 5. Muldrew said First Friday would be another Taste of Downtown, in which people can sample local cuisine.
This is the third time they will have their Taste of Downtown event. This time people can wander around or ride the shuttle provided to take them to participating local businesses. There will be several bands providing entertainment during the night.
Muldrew said that at 7 p.m. the movie “Ratatouille” would be shown for free at the Averitt Art Center third floor. Brice Studios will be providing popcorn, and Coca Cola will provide drinks out on the square for all First Friday visitors. After the movie, the Downtown Development Authority will give out prizes.
Many of which will be gift certificates at the same local downtown restaurants whose food they have had a chance to sample.
The DDA is advocating its 3/50 program, in which people spend $50 a month at 3 different businesses. Muldrew said there are many good restaurants downtown, including the newest addition, Mangiamos, which is moving to the former Hugo’s Restaurant from their current location on 336 South Main Street. The new space will offer them much more room, and allow them to develop their luncheon business with the many professionals who work on the square.
Muldrew said they are working to start the Farmers Market downtown, beginning in April. He is looking for all local gardeners to think about increasing their garden, and bring some of their fresh produce to Statesboro’s downtown Market.
Muldrew said for those businesses that want to participate on First Friday, they should call the DDA at 764-7227. Those interested in participating the Farmers Market should also call the DDA, and fill out the forms necessary to reserve their booth for the market.
