Miss Georgia pageant starts Wednesday
4 contestants have local ties

The 69th annual Miss Georgia Pageant begins Wednesday with preliminary competition in Columbus.

Four of the 40 contestants have ties to Bulloch County and nearby.

Those contestants are:

 - Miss Altamaha - Kayla Kirkland. Platform is childhood hunger. Talent is contemporary lyrical dance.

- Miss East Georgia State College - Austin Carruth. Platform is childhood cancer awareness. Talent is vocal.

- Miss Georgia Southern University - Reedi Hawkins. Platform is P.O.S.T., or Positive Operation of Social Media Techniques. Talent is Jazz Ballet En Pointe.

- Miss Statesboro High School - Madison Phillips. Platform is Girl's on the Run. Talent is vocal.

The preliminary competition will run through Friday in the Bill Heard Theatre at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, 900 Broadway in Columbus. The finals are set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

WRBL-TV in Columbus will live-stream the event on its website, www.wrbl.com.

"We are very excited to partner with the Miss Georgia Pageant on this project," said David Hart, the vice president and general manager of WRBL. "Miss Georgia is an event that Columbus is proud to host, and we're pleased to offer this service to family members, friends and fans of the contestants who cannot attend the pageant in person."
