The first Hudson Powell Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament has been scheduled for Friday, Oct. 10, at Forest Heights Country Club. It will benefit students interested in pursuing a career in dentistry.
“This is going to be a special day for so many of Hudson’s patients and friends to come together to enjoy a game of golf accompanied by the companion of fellowship, which truly will reflect the generous life of this special individual,” said Clyde Redding, the tournament chairman.
Katherine Jones, who joined Powell’s practice in 1980, added: “Through this day of golf, we will be able to assist the funding for this prestigious award to be presented annually to a student qualifying for dental school or who might already be enrolled in a dental program.”
Jones said the scholarship selection committee will include Powell’s family and staff members. The application deadline is May 30. To apply for a scholarship, contact Katherine Jones at (912) 764-6861 or firstname.lastname@example.org. To be eligible, a student must be a graduate of Georgia Southern University or have a family relative living in Bulloch County. The scholarship will be presented in time for the upcoming fall semester.
“We want to make certain anyone is invited to join us on that day,” Redding said. “We are planning an 18-hole tourney, with 36 four-player teams.
“The bottom line is,” he continued, “an annual golfing event of this caliber and the awarding of the scholarship. These two events will keep the story of Hudson Powell alive through the years to come. Can this be accomplished? Yes. Look no further than the Schenkel, started in 1972, by this community under the leadership of Georgia Southern’s Athletic Director J.I. Clements. That was 42 years ago. You bet we can keep Hudson with us for a long time!”
