Honor veterans with an ornament
Festival of trees for Web
A local Girls Scout troop is offering a unique way to remember and honor the veterans in your lives, whether they are living or have passed away. Either make or purchase a Christmas ornament, place the veteran's name on the ornament in a visible manner, enclose it in a protective box and drop it off at the Statesboro Mall.
Then, Senior Girl Scout Troop 070 will hang the ornament on a special tree honoring veterans during the 2006 Festival of Trees, which begins Nov. 18.
"Ornaments will be displayed during the festival on a special military tree as a memorial to our hometown heroes," said Sylvia Dutton, one of the troop's leaders. "The purpose of donating ornaments is to recognize the many brave men and women of our military who have dedicated tremendous effort to protect the freedoms and rights of our country."
The ornaments should be taken to the Statesboro Mall office by Friday, Nov. 17, she said.
Forms where people can include information about the ornament and the person honored are available at the mall office as well, she said.
"Your ornament will not be returned," she said. "It will, however, be kept and displayed on the military tree each year during the Festival of Trees."
The Festival of Trees, sponsored by the Senior Girl Scout Troop 070,  is a fund raiser where local schools and other groups decorate a Christmas tree. Local citizens visit the Statesboro Mall, where the trees are displayed, and can bid on the trees. The money paid for a tree goes to the group that decorated it, Dutton said.
