Want to get spooked? For Halloween fun, there’s no shortage in Statesboro and Bulloch County. Tonight through Sunday, opportunities abound in which to “get your fright on.”
Georgia Southern University’s Haunted Forest is back after a long hiatus. It began Monday and runs through Saturday. Oct. 30, from 8 p.m. until midnight each night. Admission is $7, and visitors need to be able to run from spooks and goblins and be able to handle blood-chilling scares. The forest filled with horrors is located behind Paulson Stadium. Park at the stadium, then find the start of the terrifying trail at the soccer field.
A less scary, more kid-friendly spookfest will be at GSU’s Botanical Garden on Friday, from 5-9 p.m.
This toned-down Haunted Forest won’t be quite as intense, and the kids won’t go home to have nightmares about ghouls stealing their candy stash. Admission for what the Botanical Gardens tout as “Nightly Fright with a Friendly Edge” is $2 per adult, $1 per child, grades kindergarten through fifth grade. There will be flying pumpkins, a hayride and a “Boo Bash” party.
The cult film “Rocky Horror Picture Show” has always been a popular part of Halloween, and Averitt Center for the Arts is offering a live performance of the show tonight at 9 p.m., although there will be a preshow and the doors open at 8. Costumes and characters welcome, as tradition demands, and the cost is$5.
Kids can go trick-or-treating in a safe, controlled environment Friday, Oct, 29, at the Statesboro Mall. The Halloween Spooktacular will bring different stores together to offer children treats as they and parents visit the stores throughout the mal. There will be other delights in the center of the mall area as well.
The Statesboro Flea Market on U.S. 30 North will get into the Halloween spirit Saturday, as vendors dress in costumes and the market offers fun activities and trick-or-treating at each booth.
The City of Statesboro and Downtown Development Authority will hold the “Scare on the Square” event Saturday, Oct. 30, from 5:30 p.m until the street dance is over at 9 p.m.
Merchants will compete for the best decorated scarecrows, with the winner getting an advertising package worth more than $500. Visitors can enjoy a costume contest, hay rides, “trunk or treating for the kids” where candy is distributed from the trunks of cars ($100 goes to the best decorated trunk)
The Do Good DJs will play for the street dance from 8-9 p.m, and there will be food and craft vendors.
Anderson’s General Store is hosting the STARS of Georgia, Inc. “Howl-o-ween Spooktacular” Saturday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.., with proceeds going to benefit animal rescue efforts. There will be pet adoptions and a pet costume contest (entry fee is $5). A professional photographer will be on hand for pet portraits as well.
For a really wild time, head out to Mill Creek Park’s Splash in the Boro tonight through Sunday night for a truly unique experience. Spooks replaced the water in the park, and the “Scare in the Boro” takes visitors through the Lazy River, if they dare. It’s trick or treat for all ages at Mill Creek Park from 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday night, and the water park is open for Halloween horrors from 7:30 to 10 p.m. nightly – kids ages 13 and up, please.
And for the traditional Halloween trick-or-treating from door to door in your neighborhood, the official date and time is Saturday, Oct. 30, from 6-8 p.m., according to the Statesboro Police Department. The traditional candy crawl is often scheduled for a day other than the actual Halloween date, usually when it falls on a Sunday as it does this year.
For more information on community trick-or-treating contact the Statesboro Police Department at 912-764-9911.
