Downtown Statesboro will be filled with pom-poms, marching bands and defensive backs as this month’s First Friday event becomes the Bulloch County high schools Pep Rally.
Downtown Development Authority Director Allen Muldrew said he hopes the pep rally will turn into an annual event that allows the community to gather together and interact with the local football teams, coaches, bands and cheerleading squads.
“It’s our one opportunity to get them all together and let the coaches talk about their players and their plans for the upcoming season,” Muldrew said.
The event, centered around the Bulloch County courthouse lawn, kicks off at 5:30 p.m. and goes until around 8 p.m. Each local team will take the stage for about 30 minutes, starting off with the school’s band and cheerleaders and followed by comments from the coach as well as introductions of the teams and captains. Bulloch Academy will take the stage first, followed by Portal, Southeast Bulloch and Statesboro High.
After each school has taken the stage, 20 students from each school will face off in a water balloon toss contest. The object will be to toss water balloons back and forth, down the line from one end to the other, and the team with the most water balloons at the end of the line in the shortest amount of time wins. The winning school will receive 100 free sandwiches from Subway.
There will also be inflatable moon walks for the kids as well as vendors and additional entertainment.
Plenty of parking for the event is available around the courthouse, on Vine Street, across from and behind city hall, in addition to parking outside of Sea Island and BB&T banks.
For more information, contact the Downtown Development Authority Office at (912) 764-7227.
“We’re excited about Subway sponsoring this year’s event and we’re looking forward to a great year from all the teams,” Muldrew said.
