Families in Evans, Bulloch displaced by fires
Generic Fire

Two residential fires over the weekend displaced families, but no one was seriously injured, according to fire department authorities.

Evans County Fire Chief Andy Sikes said a blaze around 6:45 p.m. Saturday on Turnpike Road sent one woman to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, but the other occupant escaped unharmed.

The cause of the fire is yet unknown, and when firefighters from Evans County Fire and Rescue arrived, the mobile home was heavily involved, with damage to the kitchen, laundry room and a bedroom, he said.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, and the American Red Cross supplied the victims with emergency food, clothing and shelter, he said.

Around 7 a.m. Sunday, Bulloch County firefighters responded to a Robbins Road residence, where the remnants of a fire in a fire pit ignited a deck, said Bulloch County Fire Chief Chris Ivey.

The family had used the fire pit the evening before and thought the flames were out, he said. The blaze flared up and ignited the deck, then damaged the exterior and a portion of the interior of the home.

One of four occupants awoke to the smell of smoke and alerted the others. A family dog escaped, but a cat was trapped inside and was found in a bedroom, suffering from smoke inhalation, Ivey said.

Firefighters rescued the cat and administered oxygen, reviving it enough for it to be taken to a veterinarian, he said.

The American Red Cross also responded to the scene and provided the victims with emergency food, shelter and other needs, he said.
