Tuesday will bring a regular City Council meeting at 9 a.m., followed by a council work session on overhauling the Alcoholic Beverage Ordinance.
The agenda for the 9 a.m. meeting includes an announcement by Allen Muldrew, the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority executive director, about the Tax Allocation District program.
Two traffic-related agenda items could aid in development of new grocery stores, City Manager Frank Parker said. One of these is a median cut onto Veterans Memorial Parkway between Jones Mill Road and Northside Drive East. The other is a traffic signal on Fair Road at Brampton Avenue. In both cases, the city would apply to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
An engineering contract for the extension of city natural gas to the Interstate 16 interchange on U.S. Highway 301 is also on the agenda.
Alcohol ordinance
No exact time has been set for the work session on the alcohol ordinance. Its separate agenda states that it will begin “following the council meeting.”  The session may also include “general discussion on emerging issues,” but no action will be taken.
City Attorney Alvin Leaphart, who has been working on a complete revision of the ordinance, told the council last month that he would have a draft ready for review Tuesday. The work session, like the regular meeting, will be open to the public.
Council members have said they want to share the proposed new ordinance with the public and receive feedback before considering it a further meeting. At the April 1 meeting, Leaphart told the council that, to have the ordinance in effect by the beginning of 2015, it should probably be adopted by August.
