State and local law enforcement officers are actively investigating the death of a Georgia Southern University student found dead in his residence on campus Tuesday.

The body of Malik Jones, 20, was found at Freedom’s Landing apartments around 8 p.m. Tuesday, said John Durden, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Statesboro Region 5 Office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

GSU officers called for assistance from GBI agents, he said,.

Jones’ body was sent to the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah for an autopsy, said Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch. “We are awaiting toxicology and histology reports” which could take up to two months, he said.

Durden said Wednesday investigators have not yet stated whether foul play is suspected, and are interviewing people close to the victim.

Futch said there was no visible indication of how or why Jones died.

GSU officials were not immediately available for comment Wednesday.

The GBI is conducting the investigation in collaboration with the Georgia Southern Police Department.  Anyone with information is urged to contact the GBI Statesboro at 912-871-1121.
