A suspect who police say robbed a sandwich shop and tried robbing two other businesses over the weekend did not have a gun, although he told his victims he did.
The calls were initially recorded as armed robberies, but further investigation revealed Hayward Arthur Fields Jr., 25, of Ellis Road, was apparently unarmed when he robbed Subway on Chandler Road of $250, said Madison Warren, Statesboro police community information specialist.
Fields was apprehended on Sunday after he tried to rob a Parker’s convenience store on Northside Drive East near Lowe’s, she said. He entered the store and produced a note regarding his intent to rob the store but walked out with nothing, she said.
Saturday, he was successful in robbing the Subway store but failed in a robbery attempt of Two Guys tobacco and beer store in College Plaza, she said. The employees at Two Guys refused his demands for cash.
No one was injured in any of the incidents.
Fields is currently being held without bond in the Bulloch County Jail, pending further court action. He faces two charges of criminal attempt to commit robbery and one count of strong arm robbery, Warren said.
Statesboro police were assisted by the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Southern University police and “citizens that provided information during the investigation,” Statesboro police Capt. James Winskey said in a statement released Sunday.
