Dr. and Mrs. John Waters of Statesboro announce the engagement of their daughter, Bethany Ruth Waters of Statesboro, to Shane Michael Gilliam, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gilliam.
    The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. Stanley R. Hendricks of Adel, Georgia, and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Waters of Warner Robins, Ga. Bethany graduated with honors from Statesboro High School in 2008. She will graduate in May with a Bachelor’s of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences Education along with an endorsement in Food Production and Management from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
    The groom-elect is the grandson of Mr. Hutton Gilliam of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and the late Opal Gilliam and Mr. Kestel England of Linden, Tenn., and the late Louise England. Shane graduated from Oak Ridge High School in Oak Ridge, Tenn., in 2006. He joined the U.S. Marines right out of high school and was a lance corporal in the 4th Combat Engineering Battalion. He was honorably discharged and is now employed by the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
    The couple has planned to wed on June 9, 2012, at 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Statesboro.
