JESUP - Statesboro earned a berth in the GHSA Class AAAA state playoffs by sweeping Wayne County Friday in the first round of the Region 3-AAAA state playoffs.

Senior Tony Hill ended the series with a walk-off, 2-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to mercy-rule the Jackets, 10-0.

The Blue Devils (13-10, No. 4 seed) used a 4-run second to jump out 5-0.  Josh Ware had a 2-run double in the rally and Zack Taylor added an RBI single. Taylor later hit a solo shot in the fourth to make it 8-0.

In Game One, the Devils won 11-7.

Statesboro, the No. 4 seed, jumped out to a 7-0 lead, then held on to win 11-7.

The Devils scored three in the first, three in the second and then one in the third. The Jackets came back with two in the third, two in the fourth and a solo homerun in the fifth.

Aaron Cone and Ware provided some insurance in the top of the seventh. Cone had an RBI single with one out to make it 8-5 and then Ware doubled in two after another WCHS error to make it 11-5.

Hill got the complete-game win for SHS despite allowing seven runs and eight walks. He struck out 11 and stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.

Statesboro moves on to the semifinals of the region playoffs. They'll be on the road Tuesday against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
