Wednesday brought about the Region 2-AAAAA tennis championships at Mill Creek Regional Park. And on the boys' side, the first place trophy never left town.

The Blue Devil boys brought home their second consecutive region title, topping Ware County in the semifinals before taking down South Effingham to capture the region crown.

Winning for the Blue Devils were Taylor Gilchrist in singles (6-0, 6-1) and the doubles team of Josh Smith and Nick Popkin (7-5, 6-4).   Jake Cliett sealed the victory by defeating Hunter Wainwright in three sets(4-6, 6-4, 6-1).

"I am so proud of the guys for putting in the hard work to win back to back titles, SHS coach Iesha Baldwin said. "It says a lot about the character of these guys. After making it to the Elite Eight last year, they made winning the championship one of their goals for this season."

In girls action, South Effingham captured the region title by defeating the Yellow Jackets of Wayne County. In the consolation game, the Blue Devils defeated Ware County to obtain the third seed in the upcoming state playoffs. Both SHS teams will be back in action next week in the first round of the state tournament.
