Screven hosts Berrien

For the first time since 2001, Screven County will open the playoffs in Sylvania. For the first time ever, the Gamecocks (15-8) will play a postseason game in their new ballpark.
“Very excited,” said SC coach Billy Pollock. “Just extremely happy to be playing at home.”
And why not? Screven finished second in the deep Region 3-AA, beating first-place Westside for the grand finale to end the regular season.
“We wanted either a good win or a good loss,” said Pollock about the win over the Patriots. “We didn’t want a blowout. We put pressure on them — and that’s the way we play ball — with our speed.”
Screven will look to continue to play its style against Berrien. Pollock said he doesn’t know much about the Rebels (16-10), so playing the Screven way will be imperative.
“It’s going to come down to who had the tougher region, because they finished third and we finished second,” said Pollock. “I really don’t know a whole lot about them. We have to play our game. Move runners over when we can and use our speed when we can.”
The Gamecocks don’t know who they’ll send to the mound in Game One. Pollock said either Jack Frankhouser or Cameron Haydon will give them a chance to win. One thing the Gamecocks do know, Jeremy Rosier will lead the way offensively. He has 33 RBIs in 23 games.
“His actions on the field — his demeanor on the field is perfect,” Pollock said. “He nevers gets overtly excited, never gets down on himself. He’s handled the low cycles well and handled the little tough stretch he’s been going through here lately. He could bust out of it at any time.”
    Today’s doubleheader begins at 3 p.m. with Saturday’s game at 11 a.m. if necessary.
