There has never been a shortage of stellar high school athletes roaming the fields around Statesboro.
On Oct. 23, another handful of former stars will be honored as the Statesboro Athletic Hall of Fame inducts its 2014 class.
The hall of fame — which was thought up by Steve Brooks and Clark Collins in 1985 and elected its first class in 1988 — votes in a new class once every three years. Nomination for the newest class is currently underway and will remain open until Sept. 12.
To be considered for induction, nominees bust be an alumnus of Statesboro High, William James High or Marvin Pittman Laboratory School and must have graduated at least 15 years ago.
“We’re very excited to recognize new members every three years,” board member Kathy Tucker said. “Between all of the schools that make up our hall of fame, there are so many who have been great athletes and great members of the community.”
Nomination forms may be downloaded on the Statesboro High School website.
No set number of inductees has been determined, though classes usually range from 3-5, plus an honorary inductee.
Among the criteria used for selecting new members are athletic awards and accomplishments from time at one of the three member schools, as well as achievements from teams in collegiate or professional leagues.
Those wishing to nominate someone for honorary induction should consider contributions made to athletics at any of the member schools.
“Along with those who excelled on the field, there are many who have played other important roles with those teams,” Parker said. “We want to be sure that people who help behind the scenes are also recognized for their efforts and all that they have brought to our teams.”
This year’s class will officially enter into the Statesboro Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 23. The night will include a reception, banquet and induction ceremony. New members will also be recognized during the Oct. 24 football game between Statesboro and Ware County.
