Local Roundup: Weather stalls BA softball

    Tuesday’s Region 4-AAA softball game between Bulloch Academy and John Milledge Academy in Milledgeville was cancelled because of field conditions.
    The game is rescheduled for Sept. 20, and will be the second game of a doubleheader between the Lady Gators and the Lady Trojans. The first game will start at 4 p.m.
    Today, Bulloch will host Stratford Academy in a single game at 4:30 p.m.

BA runners take first, third
    The Bulloch Academy girls’ cross country team had four Top 10 finishers to claim a team victory in the squad’s season-opening race Monday.
    Sophomore Ashley Burke was the top Lady Gator runner, taking second in the 28-runner race with a 22:42. Classmate Heather Jacobs was sixth (24:39), senior Anna Newton took eighth (25:33), freshman Hannah Dasher claimed ninth (25:35) and junior Lindsey Brannen was 11th (27:38).  Westminster’s Nina McCallie won the race with a 20:41
    In the boys’ meet, the Gators took third in the 48-runner race behind an eighth-place performance from Bill Sheppard. The junior clocked a 21:23 on the 3.1-mile course. Sophomore Cody Lanier was 12th (22:16), senior Themba Twala was 13th (22:18), junior Christopher Williams was 16th (22:46) and junior Justin Lane was 21st (23:06). Kaleb McLead from Trinity Christian School of Dublin won with a time of 17:01. The Crusaders also won the team meet.
    In junior varsity individual action, Kyle Samuels was the top Gator, finishing fifth (10:44) in the boys’ 1.5-miler while teammate Wilson Joiner was 14th (11:47).
    In elementary girls’ individual action, Katherine Thomas was first (14:07), Trinity Christian of Statesboro’s Emmaline Scott was second (14:08) and Liv Finley was third (14:29). In elementary boys’ individual action, Alec Brannen was first (12:25) while David Emanuel’s Andrew Lamb was second (13:03) and Gaston Kirby was third (13:58).

McAllister signs with USC-Upstate
    SWIAINSBORO — East Georgia College basketball standout Valese McAllister has signed a letter of intent to play for South Carolina-Upstate.
    As a Bobcat, McAllister was named second-team, All Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Conference in 2011.
    EGC named her the team MVP award and awarded her  a certificate of merit for outstanding leadership in women's basketball.
    McAllister earned GCAA player of the week, twice.
