Local Roundup: SHS golf qualifies for state

COLUMBUS — Both the Statesboro boys and girls golf teams qualified for the GHSA state championships on Monday at the Bull Creek golf course at Columbus.
The girls team which included Briana Jones and Emily Olssen, was led by Sarah Jane Bowers, who shot 82 to lead the team to a sixth-place finish and a score of 310.
The boys team was led by Trevor Dailey's 83, and included Clay Cribbs, Hunter Finch, T.J. Costlow and Jordan Woody. They shot 348 on the day.
The stat championships take place on May 19 in Augusta.

Lady Blue Devils advance
The Statesboro girls soccer team is headed to the second round of the Class AAAA state playoffs for a second consecutive season after a goal with just over a minute remaining.
The Lady Devils made the long trip out to Sylvester to take on the No. 2 seed Lady Rams of Worth County. The teams were even throughout the game, but Emmalyne Sisson found the back of the net with just over a minute remaining to earn Statesboro a 1-0 victory.
Statesboro and Worth battled temperatures that crept towards 90 degrees throughout the evening as both traded several scoring chances – to no avail – in the first half.
The Rams seemed to break through midway through the second half as the SHS defense committed a foul in the box for a Worth penalty kick, but the ensuing shot bounced off of the crossbar and the Devils cleared the ball to safety.
More tight play ensued before Sisson’s heroics lifted the Devils to victory.
“I can’t say how proud I am of our girls,” SHS coach Brian Thomas said. “With all of the injuries and adversity we’ve faced, it was remarkable to have them go out there and play so tough to get a win.”
Another long road trip awaits the Lady Devils as they take on Spalding County in the second round. A date and time for the game should be finalized within the next 24 hours.
