Local Roundup: SEB dominant in season softball opener

    SWAINSBORO — The Southeast Bulloch Lady Yellow Jackets got the 2012 season off to a big start Friday, with a dominant, 11-2 win at Swainsboro.
    The Jackets (1-0) were led offensively by Lindsey Crosby (2-for-2, 4 RBIs, 2 R), Effie Manahan (2-for-3, 2-run HR, 3 runs) and Leah McCarthy (2-for-3, 2 RBIs, 2 runs).
    Taylor Wilkes allowed no earned runs in four innings pitched, and Sierra Peebles struck out six to shut the door.
    SEB opens at home Monday at 5:30 p.m. against rival Screven County.
Olympian with Bulloch Co. ties wins bronze
    One of the United States' seven Wednesday medals was won by Janay DeLoach, grandaughter of Bulloch County resident Eldora DeLoach and daughter of Retired Air Force MSGT William H. DeLoach, Jr. and DeDe DeLoach.
    DeLoach won bronze in the long jump. She is a two-time USA Indoor long jump champion and 2011 outdoor runner up.
Lady Eagles picked 7th in SoCon
    A year after pulling an upset over second-seeded UNC Greensboro in the Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament, the Eagle women’s soccer team has been picked seventh in the league’s preseason coaches poll.
    The 2011 Eagles posted a 7-11-2 overall record with a 4-6-1 mark in league play.             The 2012 Eagles take the field on Sunday against Winthrop at Eagle Field in an exhibition match starting at 4 p.m.
    The Samford Bulldogs received 10 first-place votes and were picked to win the league, followed by College of Charleston and Furman, who each received one vote.
