HARLEM — The Screven County Gamecocks (3-2, 1-0 Region 3-AA) were all over Harlem on Friday, winning the region opener 35-13 on the road.
Harlem scored first, but the Gamecocks answered when Jeremy Hawkins blocked a punt and Kenton Floyd returned it for a score.
A Floyd interception set up a 14-7 run by Jimmie Robinson to give SCHS the lead for good.
Tavarious Johnson scored from 5 yards out to put Screven up 21-7.
Chandler Rigdon passed for 58 yards on a 3 of 5 clip, and Rashad Hughley passed for 76 yards on 8 of 12 passing.
Screven hosts Laney on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Bulloch falls at Brentwood
SANDERSVILLE — The Brentwood War Eagles dominated Bulloch Academy to the tune of a 47-0 win Friday at Brentwood's homecoming.
Brentwood (4-0-1) played near flawless defense, stifling the Gators running attack and holding BA to only 6 total rushing yards and 45 passing yards by Will Rushing.
The War Eagles didn't attempt a pass, but rushed for 483 yards in the win.
Eagles win SoCon opener
Jamie DeRatt collected career highs of 23 kills and 19 digs to lead Georgia Southern to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 25-27, 25-21) Southern Conference volleyball victory over Elon in the league opener for both teams.
DeRatt hit .291 on 55 swings and added four blocks and an ace for the Eagles (13-2, 1-0 SoCon). Crysten Curry posted 11 kills and eight blocks, while Katie Bange notched 11 kills and two blocks.
Nicole Jeschelnik finished with 11 kills and a career-high 20 digs, and Katalin Minnerly tallied 52 assists, 10 digs and four kills. Alexandra Beecher finished with a match-high 27 digs.
Megan Gravely led Elon (8-8, 0-1 SoCon) with 14 kills, and Ally Karle posted nine kills and five blocks. Kris Harris finished with nine kills, seven digs and three blocks.
GSU XC returns to action
Georgia Southern Cross Country travels back to the state of South Carolina for the Will Wilson The Citadel Invitational Saturday morning. The Women’s 5K race, at James Island County Park in Charleston, S.C., begins at 9:45 a.m. This will be the second race of three straight weekends of competition for the Eagles.
